A yin, A yang, this is Tao.
Chapter 5, Hsi-tz'u from I Ching
|
"A yin, A yang, this is Tao ", this is the first time yin and yang were actually named. The cyclical fluctuations of these 2 opposing forms of energy (according to the Chinese tradition), governs the entire Creation.
Together yin and yang form the balance of expression, t'ai-chi, the eternal Tao.
Yin, originally was the name of the cold side of the mountain. On the other hand, yang was the name of the hot side, the side facing the South.
Yin corresponds to the dark and receptiveness: it is passive and represents the female. Yang corresponds to light and creativity: it is active and represents the male. Yin is the Moon, Water and Earth whereas Yang is the Sun, Fire and Paradise.
I-Ching trigrams are one of the systems which represent the mutual fluctuation of this energy as they are shown in the Tao. This is a dynamic symbol which shows the continuous interaction of the 2 energies and their equilibrium. It is a symbol of harmony. When one of the 2 energies reaches its maximum expression, the transformation of its opposing side begins: this is what the 2 dots of the symbols represent. Yang contains the seed of the yin, just as the yin contains the seed of the yang.
In Tao-te ching, Lao-tzu wrote that everything had both yin and yang in it and from their alternation, a new life is born.
